Just Dough It: A Torma Workshop (Saturday, May 10 at 10am-12:30pm)
Join Lama Adam Saturday, May 10 at 10am-12:30pm for this participatory virtual workshop to raise funds for Mindfulness For Life, and 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing free, trauma-informed mindfulness and meditation training to underserved communities.
***No prior experience with torma is needed, but participants should have some familiarity with Buddhist practice.***
We’ll spend the morning together making torma, or offering cakes, a powerful hands-on act of balancing of perfection and process.
Fundamentals of torma-making will be covered, as well as specific instruction on how to make shalze (the food offering torma) and kartors (used in many practices such as Green Tara).
Throughout the session, there will be plenty of time for questions, feedback, and stories.
By the end of the workshop, we’ll each have perhaps a week or more of tormas to offer on our shrines. You’ll also want to prepare some space in your freezer or refrigerator to store your torma.
This is a hands-on workshop. Be aware that you will be working with wet oats and butter in various stages of melting. This process can be messy!
You will need the following for the workshop:
A clean, flat surface on which to work (minimum 2'x2'). Being in or near a kitchen is best.
Two 64oz boxes of plain quick oats (the 1-minute variety, not whole oats. One box will work, but you may want a backup if your first batch of dough does not come out well.)
Four sticks of butter (either salted or unsalted)
Vegetable oil
One large mixing bowl
One medium mixing bowl
A tray (two is best, but one will work)
A small paint brush, roughly 1” (available on Amazon for <$5)
A surgical mask or other mouth covering
Ice
Water
Anyone is welcome to attend, and there is no homework or preparatory study required.
If you have any questions in advance of the workshop, email Lama Adam at adam@lamaadam.com
Students must have an internet connection, email capability, the supplies listed above, and ability to connect via the Zoom video conferencing platform

FAQ:
Q: Will this workshop be recorded?
A: No. I believe real-time guidance and feedback from an experienced teacher is essential in learning the practice of torma-making. I would not recommend learning torma from a pre-recorded video.
Q: I’m not a practicing Buddhist, but I’d really like to attend. May I come?
A: It would be best if attendees have some previous experience with Buddhist practice, as torma-making relies on some of its fundamental skills and concepts. Knowing that, if you are still inspired to give it a try, you're welcome to come.
Q: Do I have to actually make the torma? Can I just listen and watch?
A: As torma is a hands-on practice, this is a hands-on workshop.
Q: I can’t come, but how else can I support Mindfulness For Life?
A: Thank you for asking! You can make a contribution using the “Donate” portal at the bottom of the page. It would also be a huge help if you subscribe to our email updates to the left of the donation portal, so we can tell you about our upcoming workshops, meditation sessions, etc.
