Creative Awakening: Integrating Art, Meditation, and Life

from $0.00

Our most powerful vehicle is what touches us most deeply. On some level, we've always known.

Creative Awakening is not an art class; it’s a six-week program built around using what already moves you—your favorite music, film, books, poetry—as the objects of your meditation. In time, you'll begin to discern and emulate the aspects that most resonate—and make a new relationship with what feels dissonant or out of reach. Through both, you can increase your appreciation and manifestation of creativity.

Our guiding text is Rick Rubin's The Creative Act: A Way of Being. Each week, Lama Mitchell and Lama Adam (hosts of the Lama Taboot podcast) facilitate an open dialogue where we share our own experiences working with art and meditation, and you'll do the same. It's a participatory program built on collective reflection, nudging us towards greater playfulness and presence; towards becoming an artist of life.

This program is co-facilitated by Lama Adam Berner and Lama Mitchell Singletary, who donate their time in support of Mindfulness For Life's charitable mission.

Each 75-minute session includes:

  • Opening reflections on key themes from Lama Mitchell and Lama Adam

  • Discussion of the weekly readings from "The Creative Act"

  • Shared dialogue around your experiences applying mindfulness to art and creative living

  • Practical insights you can bring into your week

Schedule Mondays, 7:30pm–8:45pm (via Zoom) Begins June 15 and meets weekly for 6 weeks through July 20

What You're Committing To This series works best when we show up consistently to reflect and learn together. The experience builds week by week, and much of the value comes from the richness and variety of perspectives that each person brings to the room.

By registering, you're committing to:

  • Secure your own copy of The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin

  • Complete the weekly readings before each session (approximately 40–60 pages per week)

  • Dedicate time each week to enjoying art of your own choosing—music, film, poetry, visual art, or whatever speaks to you—through a mindful, exploratory lens

  • Apply the practices between sessions, both in how you appreciate art and how you engage creatively with your life

  • Participate thoughtfully in discussions, either by speaking or contributing in the chat

  • Help create a respectful and confidential space for fellow group members

Note: This is not an art class. You will not be asked to paint, sing, or produce anything. That said, if the content and practices move you to create—that would be even better.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need to read the entire book in advance? No. We’ll read as we go. Expect around 60 pages a week, but the print is rather large.

Do I need meditation experience? Not at all. Our focus is on the applied practice of mindfulness rather than formal meditation technique, and everyone who participates can develop real skills in that area. That said, if you already have a meditation practice, you'll likely find rich new ways to deepen and expand it.

Do I have to talk or be on camera? Active participation is an important part of this series. Much of the learning comes through shared dialogue and collective reflection. You're welcome to participate in the way that feels most comfortable—speaking, contributing in the chat, or keeping your camera off—and we ask everyone to engage and share in some form.

What if I miss a week? Life happens. The experience builds week by week, so we encourage consistent attendance, though we understand that's not always possible.

Is this a Buddhist program? No. This program is open and accessible to people of any or no spiritual background. Lama Adam and Lama Mitchell bring extensive training in mindfulness, meditation, and contemplative wellbeing of many varieties, including deep immersion in the Buddhist tradition, which influences how they think and teach. Modern mindfulness as we know it has deep roots in Buddhist practice and philosophy, and Buddhist concepts may come up when they're useful—but always in service of understanding, never as doctrine. Everyone is welcome exactly as they are.
