MFL Book Club: Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness

MFL is hosting our first book club series: Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness by David Treleaven. Together, we’ll discuss how mindfulness can be taught and practiced in ways that are safer and more effective—for everyone.

With research suggesting 90% of US adults have experienced trauma, it’s likely that every meditation class includes someone processing traumatic stress. Without trauma-sensitive approaches, meditation can worsen anxiety, trigger dissociation, and even retraumatize. Treleaven’s methods can prevent unintended harm while deepening practice, encouraging participants to trust their own experience as the compass toward greater safety and stability.

This virtual series will run Mondays at 7:30pm ET from October 13 - November 17 on Zoom. Each 75-minute session will include guided discussion, reflections on the reading, and practical takeaways you can apply to your own life, teaching, or professional work. These skills are essential for every practitioner and teacher, and form the bedrock of Mindfulness For Life’s curriculum.

Discussions will be facilitated by MFL board members Lama Adam Berner (Certified Advanced Trauma Sensitive Mindfulness Practitioner) and Kayla Cardenas (MSW, LISW), who volunteer their leadership to fund Mindfulness For Life’s charitable mission.
